MAKING CHRISTIANITY MORE CHINESE?

In recent times, the Chinese authorities have asked the religious traditions present on their territory to «sinicize ».

In response, it must first be remembered that the first Christian communities in China have always given the message of the Gospel an expression rooted in their culture and in their memory.

At the same time, the Chinese authorities’ request offers an opportunity for Christians to reflect on the adaptation of their faith to the spiritual aspirations and to the cultural and social issues of China today.

It is above all a «humanization» of the society which Christians are called to operate, and this aspiration must be welcomed with interest and respect by the civil authorities. (The Author is a professor of religious sciences at the Fudan University of Shanghai).
