IT IS TIME FOR THE ABOLITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

The explosion of a Russian nuclear-powered missile at the beginning of August highlighted the dangers of a new nuclear arms race.

Faced with a growing rift between nuclear-weapon and non-nuclear-weapon states, the Church will play a critical role as the debate on new nuclear weapons develops.

The following interventions are called for with urgency: to make the teaching of the Church better known; to take diplomatic initiatives to make the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons more effective; and, to mobilize lay groups and social action agencies of the Church to say “no” to nuclear war.
