The malaise of citizens in today’s Western societies derives from the fact that control over the forces which govern our lives is diminishing, instead of growing: we think we are individuals who choose freely, but in fact we are governed by many obligations.
This article examines three areas where we spend our daily lives as citizens: public space, work and family. Finally, a future of freedom is envisaged, characterized by resistance to the paralyzing order and its effects and by action together with others for the common good.
